How to Install Billiard Lights: Height Guide & Model-Specific Specs

Why "Universal" Height Advice Misses the Mark

You've probably seen the rule of thumb floating around: hang your billiard light 31–33 inches above the table surface, or 75–90 inches from the floor. Both figures are cited frequently — and both are incomplete without knowing your specific fixture.

Fixture body depth, shade width, bulb type, and light spread angle all affect the ideal hanging height for your room. This guide gives you model-aware specs and a step-by-step process to measure for your exact space.

Step 1 — Understand the Two Key Measurements

Before you touch a tape measure, get clear on which measurement you're working with:

  • Bottom-of-fixture to table surface — controls glare, shadow, and light spread. This is the primary spec vendors publish.
  • Floor to table surface — standard pool tables sit at 29–31 inches; bar-height tables can be 36 inches or taller. Confirm yours before calculating floor-to-fixture height.

Floor-to-fixture = floor-to-table + bottom-of-fixture-to-table. Always build the calculation from the table up, not the floor up.

Step 2 — Check Your Ceiling Clearance

A common oversight: measuring the drop without accounting for available ceiling height. Here's how to check:

  1. Measure your floor-to-ceiling height in the center of the table area (not at the wall).
  2. Subtract the recommended bottom-of-fixture-to-table height from Step 1 above.
  3. Subtract your table height (e.g., 30 inches).
  4. The remainder is your maximum allowable fixture + chain/cord drop from the ceiling.

Example: 96-inch ceiling − 33-inch fixture-to-table − 30-inch table = 33 inches of available drop for fixture body + hardware. If your fixture body is 12 inches tall, you have 21 inches of chain/cord before the fixture body begins.

Rooms with ceilings below 84 inches may require a flush-mount or semi-flush adapter — confirm compatibility before ordering.

Step 3 — Model-Specific Height Recommendations

The specs below reflect the manufacturer-verified recommendations for each Table Gaming Plus fixture. Use the bottom-of-fixture to table surface column as your primary target.

Step 4 — Account for Shade Width & Light Spread

A wider shade generally allows you to hang the fixture slightly higher because the light cone covers more of the table. A narrower shade hung too high will leave the pockets in shadow.

  • 3-light / 52–54" shade: follows manufacturer height spec closely; little margin to go higher.
  • 5-light / 60–64" shade: up to 2–3 inches of upward flexibility if your ceiling requires it — confirm with your fixture's spec sheet.
  • Single pendant / bar-style: center the fixture over the table lengthwise and use the manufacturer's recommended height without deviation.

Printable Installation Checklist

Before You Buy

  • ☐ Measure floor-to-ceiling at table center
  • ☐ Confirm table height (standard = 29–31", bar = 36")
  • ☐ Note ceiling junction box location (centered over table?)
  • ☐ Verify ceiling box is rated for the fixture weight
  • ☐ Check fixture shade width vs. table length (shade width ≈ 50–60% of table length is a common guideline)

Before You Install

  • ☐ Read the fixture's included manufacturer installation sheet
  • ☐ Calculate available drop: ceiling height − table height − fixture-to-table target = max drop
  • ☐ Cut chain/cord to calculated length (leave 2" extra before final trim)
  • ☐ Verify ceiling box wiring: turn off breaker, confirm ground wire present
  • ☐ Check bulb type and wattage limits per socket (do not exceed fixture max)

During & After Install

  • ☐ Hang fixture at rough height — do NOT tighten canopy yet
  • ☐ Use a tape measure from table surface to fixture bottom; adjust chain links until correct
  • ☐ Level the fixture across all shade arms before tightening
  • ☐ Restore power and test all bulbs
  • ☐ Stand at each pocket and confirm no direct glare into your line of sight
  • ☐ Finalize canopy tightening and cover screws

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Hanging too high — creates hot spots and deep pocket shadows; players will complain about inconsistent lighting fast.
  • Using floor-to-fixture height as the only guide — floor height is derivative; always anchor to table surface.
  • Ignoring fixture body depth — a fixture with a 14-inch body height hung at 33 inches bottom-to-table actually occupies a very different visual space than a shallow 6-inch body at the same drop.
  • Not centering over the table — off-center placement creates asymmetric shadows that affect break and cut shots near one rail.
